After a long and tiring day, hot showers are a great way to relax the muscles and nerves. It also helps improve cardiovascular health, opens skin pores, and promotes a good night of sleep. But did you know that the steam generated after such hot showers or baths tends to damage your bathroom?
The moisture buildup can lead to mould on the bathroom walls. It can further damage the drywall, cabinets, or cupboards and trim. Needless to say, such types of damage are costly to repair. Luckily, there are a few ways to avoid common “steamy” bathroom problems. Scroll down to learn!
Proper Ventilation
The easiest way to prevent steamy bathroom issues is by reducing the amount of steam created during baths. For that, you can turn on the ventilation fan before using hot water. It will ensure that the room is warm yet less misty. If you don’t have a ventilation fan, you can slightly open the windows to let the mist escape. Or, you can consider installing a ventilation fan.
Tip: If you already have a ventilation fan, but it is not working properly, try cleaning its filter. It will help improve the efficiency of the fan.
Open The Window Or Door Afterwards
Once you are done showering, make sure to keep the windows or door open. It will allow the steam to dissipate, which will reduce the chances of mould, musty smell, or water stains on the walls. You can also trim the bottom of the bathroom door a little to help the mist escape while you are showering.
Make Sure There Are No Plumbing Issues
Sometimes the signs such as musty smell, moisture damage on cabinets, and mould or mildew on “non-shower wall” are caused due to leakage or any other plumbing issues and not necessarily due to mist. Therefore, you must contact a plumber to inspect the bathroom. They can perform leak-testing and make necessary repairs to ensure that you have a healthy and fully functional room.
Note: Apart from your bathroom, you should also check for plumbing issues in the kitchen to avoid any possible damage.
Check For The Signs Of Mould
Dark and damp areas are an ideal breeding ground for mould. If your bathroom has mould, you might as well have allergic reactions such as wheezy breath or irritated eyes. Therefore, you should check for the signs of mould on a regular basis. You can also hire an expert to inspect the damage caused by mould and prevent it.
Raise The Temperature In Bathroom
Last but not least, you should set the thermostat to at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit before showering. By doing so, the bathroom temperature will rise, which will help cut down the mist. Make sure to set the temperature at least half an hour before using the room.
You can also set up a dehumidifier in the bathroom. It will help trap the moisture, thus minimizing the effect of mist.
Wrapping Up
Understand that if your home is not healthy, it will have a severe impact on your well-being as well. Therefore, you need to ensure that you take utmost care of the functional areas (your bathroom and kitchen) by protecting them from mould, leakage, clogged drains, and other issues.
