Art pieces can bring your interior to life. If you think your living space looks too bare, perhaps, some wall art and flower vases are what you need.
But the question is, where do you start?
Figuring out how to perfectly decorate a home using artwork can be pretty daunting. It looks simple when you look at one already done, but every decor takes careful consideration to make the decorative pieces work.
So here’s a little guide to get you started.
Choosing your art pieces
Now, there’s no rule as to what artwork to use when decorating your living space. While some people go for only wall photographs, some include a mix of decorative pottery and vases. Variety, indeed, is the spice.
Furthermore, when it comes to cost, you may go for DIY artwork you painted yourself or frame your photos into a collage using a free online app.
If, however, you want a more luxed-up appeal, consider going for pieces that exude value. For instance, Native American pottery is known to add a rich sense of antique beauty to a space. Fortunately, you can find one that’s budget-friendly or high-end according to your needs.
Placing wall photographs
Wall photographs do not have to be photos of you or the family. Some can be nature photographs, paintings, and some can be your portraits or family photographs. It’s all comes down to placement.
Speaking of which, there are typically three strategic places to hang wall photographs: above the sofa, above a mantelpiece, and beside windows.
Above the sofa
Some rules to follow:
- If you’re hanging one piece of art above your sofa, ensure it’s about 2/3 of the sofa’s width and hangs centrally. A panoramic photograph works best.
- If you’re grouping photos, those of similar sizes should surround a larger one, and the group should measure 2/3 of the sofa’s width.
- There should be around 6 inches of space between the photograph’s bottom and the sofa.
Above a mantelpiece
You really don’t need to hang the photograph on the wall as you can lean it on top of the mantelpiece for a more casual look. If you must hang it, it should be at least 4 inches away from the top of the mantelpiece.
Beside a window
This isn’t always necessary. But if the window takes up the space behind your sofa, you may place a photograph on each side of the window, ensuring the whole arrangement looks centred. However, if you’re using curtains that spread out, you may choose not to add photographs to avoid making the space look too crowded.
Using pottery
Artworks like pottery and ceramics should be placed at focal points where they best steal attention. Especially when it’s a valuable piece, you want it to draw compliments from visitors.
Here are some ways to go:
- Line small or medium-sized pots along the top of the bookshelf.
- Place pots on every alternate shelf
- Add green plants inside the pot to create a natural aura in your space
- Add one large pottery in the centre of the dining or coffee table and place flowers in it. This creates a focal point.
- You don’t have to go with a uniform look. You can use pottery of different colours, patterns, and designs throughout your living space. However, you can create a more modern aesthetics by grouping pottery of the same colour and shape.

Even as you decorate your space, you don’t always have to be too serious about it. Create a comical flair by adding funny and playful pictures and paintings—something that lightens your mood when you take a glance.
