One of the hardest things we ever have to do is live. We’re living in a world that was created to be beautiful, with fruit hanging from the trees and beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see. But we all have to work and we all have to pay taxes, and that can be difficult on the mood.
Trying to balance childcare for the kids, your job, your career aspirations, any study that you might do to enhance your career aspirations and more. It’s hard. Sometimes bad things happen, and those bad things put us in the worst kind of mood, finding the right mood boosters is not the easiest thing to do. Sometimes, we make decisions that get us down, and there are other times on top of that that we feel bad for absolutely no reason. All that you may know in those moments is that you want to feel better, but you just don’t know how.
There is plenty of research out there that shows us how we can boost our mood and whether you like to sink into an ice bath to centre yourself and remind yourself that there are worse things in life than sitting in a bucket of ice, or you want to go to the pub with your friends, you need to figure out the mood boosters that work well for you. Luckily, we’ve got some mood boosters below for you so that you can learn which ones would be best for you and your well-being going forward. Let’s dive in.
- Consider practicing gratitude. It can be difficult to feel grateful or any type of gratitude when you feel like life is getting you down. When you feel like the house is too cluttered and life is getting in the way of doing anything fun, you need to start feeling better. And a good way to do that is to remember the things that you already have. So you can’t go to the beach this year, but are you able to keep food on the table and a roof over your head? That’s a nice thing to be grateful for. You can’t get the kids into long-term childcare, but do you get to spend more time with them yourself? That’s the thing to be grateful for. You can find things to be grateful for in even the smallest of things, such as being able to make yourself a cup of tea when somebody may have dementia and forgets how.
- Start being more compassionate about yourself. We are less judgmental of our thoughts, emotions and behaviour when we treat ourselves with compassion. You can boost your compassion by making sure that you have journals and letters that are compassionate and that remind you of all the good things about you. This letter can treat you kinder than you ever did, so you need to think about how you can cultivate that self-compassion and go from there.
- You should boost your self-confidence. Sometimes you need to feel more confident about yourself, and working on boosting yours is much better as a mood booster than anything else. When you feel more confident, you’re more likely to take the action that you need to improve your life, and as a result, you’ll spend more time in a much better mood. You can boost your confidence by reminding yourself of your strengths and your positive qualities. Think about what your strengths are right now, even if it’s something as simple as cooking a great meal or being excellent at video games. Whatever it is, you can boost your mood because you feel good about yourself.
- Remind yourself of who you are. Research shows that looking at the current situation from another point in time can help to decrease those negative emotions. Where you are right now in your life is where you wish you were five years ago. Understanding that can put you in a much better mood because you feel like you’ve accomplished something more. Telling yourself to feel better soon and talk about all the great things that your future self will be doing once this challenging time has passed is going to set you up for success. Constantly striving for something better is a great way to make sure that you can boost your mood.
